Joana D’Arc (1948) / Joan of Arc (1948)

The film hasn’t even started and we’re already sure that we’re watching a Victor Fleming production. It’s a long film (145 minutes!) and the actors are presented in the beginning in a list that looks a lot with the opening credits of “Gone with the Wind” (1939). It has a huge cast, it is an epic in Tehcnicolor and the lead is a strong and unforgettable female character – even more iconic than Scarlett O’Hara.

You may already know the essentials about the story: the year is 1429. England and France have been at war for nearly 100 years (the war started in 1337). A 17 year-old peasant, Joan of Arc (Ingrid Bergman) receives a message from God saying that she must go to the Dauphin Charles (José Ferrer) and lead the army that will make France will the war. The Dauphin will be proclaimed King Charles VII, as God wishes. Of course this won’t be an easy task. Joan meets many obstacles in her way, both with authorities and with commanders in the battlefield. For them, it’s difficult to follow the orders of a young woman, and this sexist bias is not something that was left behind in the 15th century. Joan of Arc is a historical and religious figures, but the themes of her story couldn’t be more modern. Besides sexism, there are political disputes and corruption.

As Joan of Arc, Ingrid Bergman never looks like a teenager (she was 33 when the film was made), but this is forgivable. Ingrid offers a supernatural strength to the role, with a deep voice when she's giving orders and with a sweet, innocent look when she talks about God and the voices of the saints she hears. I like to think that the voice of the actress who gave the best performance as Joan of Arc, Renée Falconetti (from “The Passion of Joan of Arc”, 1928) in some way sounded like Ingrid's voice. There is total conviction in Bergman's Joan of Arc, and at the same time a colossal purity.

In 1946 Ingrid starred in the play “Joan of Lorraine”, thar served as the basis for the film. The play, however, is metalinguistic, as it shows how the actors appearing in a play about Joan of Arc have their lives changed by the roles they play. In order to follow Hollywood patterns, the story became more conventional, focusing only in the martyr's trajetory (imagine if the film was made in England: Laurence Olivier could perfectly obtain the effect of “filmed theater”). Bergman really wanted to make the film, that's why she, her husband, the dentist Peter Lindstrom, the director Victor Fleming and the producer Walter Wanger got together and created Sierra Pictures – whose first and only project was this impressive epic film.

Victor Fleming e Ingrid Bergman

Maybe you already know which was the fate of this film. A little after the premiere, Ingrid got involved with the Italian director Roberto Rossellini and became a pariah in the USA, as the public refused to see an adulterous woman playing the role of a saint onscreen. Victor Fleming passed away a few months after filming and, in the apex of the Bergman/Rossellini scandal, the film was edited into a 100-minute version, losing a lot of its characteristics. Only in 1998 a restoration was made and the complete version reappeared.

Is the 1948 version more complete than the silent classic from 1928? Probably, because it tells everything we know about the saint, even though there are still many doubts and legends about her. But it's not as emotive – and it'll never be. Prettier, yes, in an Oscar-winning Technicolor photography, but the 1928 has in its rawness its biggest triumph. Falconetti's accusers are more hateful than Bergman's. The judgement of Bergman's Joan of Arc is dishonest, the judgement of Falconetti's is inhuman.

Bergman barely knew that her relationship with Rossellini would make her some kind of martyr of morality and hypocritical good costumes in the post-WWII societey. In 1954 she would again play Joan of Arc, directed by her new husband in a very strange film (after all, it's a musical!). But, even with the critics and the near erasure it's the 1948 version that brings one of the best Joans of Arc in the history of film. It's Ingrid Bergman's strangth, who once again acts with perfection.

“A Mulher do Dia / Woman of the Year” (1942) e a mulher que eu quero ser

Tess é a personagem de Katharine Hepburn em “A Mulher do Dia / Woman of the Year” (1942).
O amor embeleza tudo no filme.

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most well known literary characters in the world. Holmes was created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887 and was the lead in 60 works by Doyle and, until today, more than 300 movies. Starting in 1900, Sherlock became the most portrayed character on screen, according to the Guinness Book, and was played by more than 70 actors. The great John Barrymore played Sherlock Holmes only once, in 1922, but, oh my, what a performance he gave!

We have in the movie an outstanding cast, starting with John Barrymore. Aerial footage of London. A professor Moriarty who is the combination of Abraham Lincoln and Doctor Caligary. An embrionary Nick Charles. Wonderful cinematography. All the ingredients create a must-see movie.

Once upon a time there was a student from Cambridge called Sherlock Holmes (John Barrymore). His friend Watson (Roland Young) refers him to solve a problem that Prince Alexis (Reginald Denny) has: your Highness is being accused of stealing money from the university’s athletic society. This first case takes Sherlock to Professor Moriarty (Gustav von Seyffertitz, who terrorized Mary Pickford in “Sparrows”, from 1926) and then our friend Sherlock finds his calling: he was born to be a detective and erase the evil off the world. Then Sherlock establishes 221B Baker Street as his headquarters.

Years later, we find the Sherlock Holmes we all know and love. Prince Alexis inherited the throne, broke up his engagement with Rose Faulkner (Peggy Bayfield) and is being blackmailed by Moriarty. Holmes doesn’t really care about the Prince’s reputation, but he won’t miss the opportunity to once again see Alice Faulkner (Carol Dempster), with whom he fell in love.
Sherlock in love

Director Albert S. Parker didn’t adapt any of Conan Doyle’s original stories, but an 1899 play written and starred by William Gillette, the greatest Sherlock Holmes of the stage. Gillette turned his play into a movie in 1916, and for many years his film was considered lost, but fortunately it was found and restored in 2015.
William Gillette

Restoration is also part of the story involving the 1922 Sherlock. This film was also considered lost for decades. In the 1970s, a copy was found, but with the takes all mixed. The detective work was made by Albert S. Parker himself, who recalled the order of the takes and helped the restaurators. His memory, however, was fading, and Parker died before the job was completed. Then historian Kevin Bowwnlow jumped into the work and rebuilt the film the best way he could. The restoration was paid by Hugh Hefner – yes, the editor of Playboy magazine.

If the film was lost, besides Barrymore’s performance, the world would never again see a young Hedda Hopper as secondary character Madge Larrabee, and William Powell’s film debut would also be lost forever. William is here without a mustache, playing a Cambridge student who later becomes a butler. The image above, ladies and gentlemen, is the very first time the world saw our beloved Bill Powell:

In the end, we have a movie in which Barrymore shines. He is the focus of the feature since the first time Sherlock appears, under a tree, at the eight minute mark. The sequence in which Moriarty invades Holmes’s house is full of suspense, but its conclusion is too fast compared to the tension that escalated – it looks like there is some scene missing. It may be weird to find a 40 year-old college student, but Barrymore is a perfect Sherlock Holmes: tall, elegant, charming, intelligent and skilled.

If you are a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch, Basil Rathbone or any other Sherlock, you’ll see how all of them owe to Barrymore the intellectual gentleman aura the character is famous for. William Gillette may have introduced the quote “Elementary, my dear Watson”, but it was John Barrymore, in his only adventure as Holmes, who showed what really is to incorporate such an iconic character.
