Com os Braços Abertos / Boys Town (1938)

Nós precisamos desesperadamente de heróis.

We're in desperate need of heroes.

But not any hero can do. We'll pass Batman, Aquaman, Superman, Iron Man, Wonder Woman – even though she is a badass – and keep on looking for another kind of hero. A hero – or heroine – whose superpower is being, above all, human. These are the people we need.

Will Father Flanagan be good enough for the position? Let's see his hero file:

Nome: Edward Joseph Flanagan
Name: Edward Joseph Flanagan

Superpowers:
Patience – super patience
Believing “there is no such a thing in the world as a bad boy”
Taking care of orphaned or homeless boys and building a community for them
Giving the boys freedom of worship – any religion was valid at Boy's Town
Teaching the boys notions of citizenship and discipline
Proving wrong greedy journalists, skeptics and angry “fine citizens”

Atos heroicos:

Heroic actions:
Founded the first Boys Town in 1917
Challenged the vicious cycle of abandonment, child abuse, violence and crime
Founded the current Village of Boys Town in 1921
Personally helped 6000 people with his program – many of them hard-boiled boys like character Whitey (Mickey Rooney), who, without Father Flanagan, would turn into crime.
After his death in 1948, his work expanded through 10 states. As for today, more than 1,4 million people are helped by Boys Town.

Reconhecimentos:

Accolades:
Spencer Tracy won his second Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan in the biopic “Boys Town”. Tracy’s wife received the prize in his behalf during the ceremony.
Father Flanagan is a member of the Nebraska Hall of Fame. His canonization process started in 2012.

Female counterpart: Have you realized that all heroes have a female counterpart – even if they are not romantically linked? Well, the first person I thought about when I first got to know Father Flanagan's story was missionary Gladys Aylward. This notable English lady took care of Chinese kids during the 1930s war against Japan and was also portrayed in film: in “The Inn of the Sixth Happiness” (1958), she is played by Ingrid Bergman.

We need people like Father Flanagan – and also Gladys Aylward – who believe in the human potential, want to fight inequality and put a stop in privileges. As Father Flanagan himself said:

“Custa tão pouco ensinar uma criança a amar, e custa tanto ensiná-la a odiar”.

“It costs so little to teach a child to love, and so much to teach him to hate”.

I was born in the mid-1990s, which makes me a millennial – one of those people who are destroying everything that was once good and pure on Earth. I grew up in front of the TV, and I remember, vividly, both on cable and on public television, watching Looney Tunes. Years later, I was shocked to learn that the cartoons I watched over and over in the beginning of the 2000s were actually made in the 1950s or even before – everything looked and sounded so up to date to them! But my biggest shock was to learn that Porky Pig, who I saw as a forever-sidekick, had actually had his own series of cartoons as a main character.

I was used to seeing Porky Pig as the stuttering company to the distempered and unsympathetic Duck Dodgers. Or as Friar Tuck, the sweet religious swine in “Robin Hood Daffy” – a cartoon that was shown about twice a month on TV. Or as the mentor to young and hungry Hamton J. Pig in “Tiny Toon Adventures”.

Actually, Porky Pig preceded them all: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester and Tweety, Elmer Fudd... Porky Pig debuted on the screen on March 9th, 1935. He quickly became the most popular animated character from the Looney Tunes short series - one of the two animated series produced by Warner Brothers in the 1930s. The other series, Merrie Melodies, had only short films in color.

Porky was conceived as a supporting character, and one that stuttered because the actor who voiced him, Joe Dougherty, also stuttered. Joe voiced Porky Pig for two years, before versatile Mel Blanc took on the job in 1937. That same year, Porky Pig met his significant oinker other, Petunia Pig, and his closest pal, Daffy Duck.
A girl pig with an attitude
First meeting

For his good nature, he became an ideal straight man - or rather pig - type to appear with Daffy Duck, the zaniest character created by Warner Brothers. The original Daffy is the closest thing we have from screwball in cartoons.
Felizmente, hoje “Breakdowns of 1939” está disponível online:

But for a pacific straight pig, Porky had a curious and not so honorable honor: he was the first character ever to curse on film. Well, he almost was. He cursed in a 1938 cartoon, but it was censored by the Hays Office and could only be shown 50 years later. Luckily, nowadays “Breakdowns of 1939” is available online:

Porky was also briefly Sylvester’s owner, during the 1940s and 1950s. He was Space Cadet in “Duck Dodgers in the 24 ½th Century”, a 1953 cartoon that originated a whole series 50 years later. Space Cadet was a simple minion who was often smarter than his chief. In the 1950s, Porky even had his own comic book, and in the 1960s he had his own Saturday morning show, aptly called “The Porky Pig Show”.

This was the end of the Looney Tunes golden age. In the 1970s and 1980s, Porky appeared briefly in films that were actually compilations of shorts made in past decades. But he would return in the 21st century.

Space Jam

Porky was the definitive straight man who was mocked by his naïveté in “The Looney Tunes Show”, a new iteration from 2012 that put the characters in sitcom-like situations. It was in this show that Porky finally started interacting more with Bugs Bunny, although Daffy Duck remains his closest frenemy.

Following a thread of paying tribute to old-style cartoons, the über-short segments of “Wabbit “(also called New Looney Tunes) brought back an extremely skinny Bugs, a slapstick-y Daffy and a rotund Porky Pig. This is the most recent way the character has been seen on TV.

Like many of the Looney Tunes characters, Porky Pig became a household name, appeared in a lot of merchandising and is now part of the pop culture – especially because of his catchphrase. So far, only one short form the Looney Tunes was inducted to the National Film Registry: “Porky in Wackyland”, from 1938. As you may have imagined, it starred the unforgettable and adorable Porky Pig – a swine still going strong at 82 years old.

Leaving home in order to pursue your dreams in never easy. Not that I have done this myself – I only came close – but movies make me think that it is not easy. And “Stage Door” in particular gives me this feeling.

The newest arrival in Mrs. Orcutt's boarding house for young and aspiring actresses is Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn), a fancy and polite lady. This doesn't mean that she can't defend herself against the other girls, who are very different from her. Terry is fluent in sarcasm, and uses it perfectly in a battle of wits with her new roommate, Jean Maitland (Ginger Rogers).

Jean is also not very friendly with snobbish Linda Shaw (Gail Patrick), who is going out with manager Anthony Powell (Adolphe Menjou). Powell is the last hope for another girl in the boarding house, Kay Hamilton (Andrea Leeds, in a great performance), who hasn't worked in over a year and has been starving in order to be able to pay the rent.

The girls rely on a man's wish to become stars and maintain their fame. We must see the parallel between this and the recent Weinstein case – Weinsteingate, maybe? - that shrieked Hollywood. In entertainment, women are still held hostage of man's wishes – often sexual wishes – if they want to have a career. Show business is the same, 80 years later.

When Terry enters Powell's office to confront him – right after Kay fainted outside the office when she was told that Powell wouldn't see her – he says many, many sexist things to her, like “most women should wash dishes and have a family instead of trying a career at the theatre”. It's infuriating. And it's even worse if we remember that, even being popular and dapper, actor Adolphe Menjou was like this in real life: a staunch conservative who appeared in the HUAC hearing VOLUNTARILY to name names and destroy lives..

Of course, being this way, Powell never keeps a girl for too long. He trades Linda for Jean, and in their first date in his house Jean gets drunk and emotional, believing all his lies. After Jean, it's Terry's time to visit Powell, and she does it in a badass way: she confronts him and doesn't accept his compliments or hypocrisies. Terry is there to make business between equals, not to submit herself to a manager.

We also have in the boarding house Eve Arden as Eve, the lanky owner of a cat, a very young Ann Miller, Constance Collier as an older mentor obsessed with her bygone fame, and Lucille Ball as Judith, the street-wise, cynical and sarcastic friend all theater girls need – a role similar to the one she played in “Dance, Girl, Dance” (1940). In a sense, this is a role similar to those Joan Blondell played many times in pre-Codes. It's nice to see Lucy, with darker hair and at only 26 years old, being a little pessimistic and delivering one-liners.

I understand all the girls living in the boarding house are young, in their late teens or early twenties, but they are usually bickering and discussing. All right, Kay is loved by them all, and loves them all, but all the other girls still have their “cliques” like in a bullying-full high school. It's another film that wants to prove that there can't be friendship among females if there is not rivalry before.

Stage Door” was a successful stage play written by Edna Ferber. For the movie version, a lot was altered and  the screenplay seems too diffuse at times – and it commits the crime to create a male manager character, who didn't exist in the play, that becomes the center of the movie and the discussion, as you may have noticed in this review. In the end, “Stage Door” is a film with flaws, but one that shows how life in the show business is, above all, a ruthless cycle.
